Alumnus Gloria Freeman-Woniewala is honored to announce the formulation of the Essien & Eugenia Freeman Scholarship Fund for Students with Physical Limitations. This scholarship is in honor of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Essien Freeman’s legacy, and service to their community.
They were extraordinary individuals who were grounded in service to humanity. My father served in World War 11 and my mother was a phenomenal woman of strength. She gave of herself to others and adopted and raised many children who were not biologically hers with great love and devotion.
My parents were uniquely chosen to parent a special needs child. I was born of my mother with a physical limitation which was out of the ordinary. But their perspective of this responsibility changed the course of my life. They inspired me to be the person I am today.
Today, my mother has planted in me the spirit of joy and the fulness of life. I have learned of the ability to take risks in the midst of uncertainty. She influenced me to reach for the stars. Her most famous words of encouragement to me were “there is nothing you cannot do when you put your mind to it”. Words I believe until this day.
After graduation from Ricks, I studied at Cuttington University College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English/Education and later graduated with a Master’s Degree in School Administration & Supervision from Kent State University in Ohio.
Cost/Award: $500 ( $250 per student)
